Vince Burlapp drives the

2003 Honda Accord

There it is: the all new Accord for 2003. As you can see, it is a pretty nice looking car from this angle. The most modern part of this car is the front. Otherwise, it is still very conservative.

It is still available with a choice of 4 or 6 cylinder engines. The 4 is similar to the one used inn the CRV and Element. It is pretty smooth, and quiet. But after driving the V6, the 2.4 Liter 4 cylinder engine is a tough sale. It feels slower and much less responsive than the similar engine in the Altima.

And it's not all that quiet. It would never pass for a small V6.

But if you drive pretty slowly and never push your car, this engine should be fine.

The interior is a huge leap forward. Everything is more modern and solid looking. And it feels really good to. It's pretty much the opposite of the new Altima.

And it is good enough for Honda to use in the European version of the Accord, where it competes with much more expensive cars than in the U.S.

This is the interior of the EX Leather version. As luxurious as the Acura TL, with an even more complete list of features, like dual air conditioning.

The materials are better, and everything is thicker.

The car also rides better, and the steering is light and precise. But it still doesn't feel as heavy, or solid as a TL.

That is a perfect fit. Honda has even redesign the switches for a more European look and feel.

But the car still competes mostly with other Japanese models. It doesn't really compare to a Passat, which is what Honda is trying to do.

Which is not a bad thing. Their engines are superior to the VW.

The best choice is the new V6 engine. It is one of the quietest and quickest engine you can buy. And maybe the most refined V6 on the market. This really makes this car one of the very best midsize sedan on the market.

For under $25 000, you can get a pretty loaded V6 model. With a nicer interior than both the Camry and Accord, and also better engines than both. The design is up to you. All 3 are pretty boring if you ask me. And the Passat still looks younger and more modern. But that horrible 1.8Liter turbo engine on the VW cannot compete with the Japanese motors.
