2002 Acura TL test drive

First of all, the 2002 is not all new. Like Acura would like you to think.

The car came out late 1998 as a 1999 model. It is still basically the same car, except for the front end, the rear lights and the wheel.

They also added a sport version called the S.

But most people should consider the regular TL with a more comfortable suspension, and still, a lot of power.

It is a conservative, but very good looking car with only one option: a useless navigation system.

Save your money and get yourself a couple of maps.

I have spent a lot of time behind the wheels of the Acura TL , and just spent a couple of days behind the 2002.

The interior is still one of the best looking, and best made in that price range. For 2002, the headrest can be adjusted forward, which solves one of the problems of previous models. And they now come with a convenient memory system.

Inside the car is very quiet, although not as much as a Lexus. You can still hear the engine, but it is a very pleasant sound.

Once you get going, you notice that the steering and the suspension are almost perfect. They are both a little firm, but also very smooth.

You will also notice that it is a very fast car. It is a bit hard to take off smoothly. The power comes in right away.

The 1999 model had a 4 speed transmission that was staying in 1st a bit too long. The new 5 speed automatic is better and a little smoother. But it still sometimes hesitates when you step on the accelerator. Downshifts are not instant.

A nice touch: it'll stay in gear if you go up or down hill.

One thing you will also notice, is more noise at freeway speed, mostly due to noisy tires.

But the car always feels very solid, and stable.

The back seat is very comfortable, but a little bit hard to get into if you are tall. There isn't much headroom in the car in general.

And the rear bench sits higher than the front seats. Which is great for kids, who can also enjoy the middle space, thanks to a full seatbelt.

As you can see, the rear windows go down all the way. A rare treat.

I have to say that the Acura TL is one of the best car you can buy for the money. For $28 880, you get a very smooth and powerful V6 with 225 horsepower. A sunroof, power leather seats, a Bose stereo with CD changer, and one of the most reliable car on the market.

Also check out the Acura CL, the 2 door coupe version of the TL.

With a similar equipment, it is not only cheaper than a Lexus, Mercedes, Audi or BMW, but also a VW Passat!

The only cars that I can see in the same league are:

- Infinity i35. An even more conservative design, but a softer suspension and a little quieter

- Nissan Maxima GLE. A better deal than the similar Infinity. More modern looking.
